Parallels Desktop for Mac – Frustrating

November 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I had installed Parallels 3.0 for Mac on my Mac Mini in August 08. So was not elible for the free upgrade to ver. 4. Apparently only those who bought it in September were eligible. Cest La Vie. So any way – I went ahead and downloaded the 170MB file and installed it.

At first it was doing fine. Asked me to backup etc. Which I did do. Then it seemed to all go, sort of, wrong.

Here’s what happened – it installs in 4 stages and after each stage I got a message to manually go in to re-activate my Windows. When I tried this I got a message that my original copy of windows has been activated already. I know that. And I should call microsoft.

Anyway – long story short – I finished installing it and had 3 days to activate Windows and one month to use Ver 4.0.

Having said all the above I have discussed this with a friend and he installed ver 4.0 over ver 3 and it all just worked. Including the fact that he did not need to activate windows.

I do know that if I go back to version 3 from a fresh start all should just work. But for now – with a Windows PC sitting next to my mac mini I don’t really need to install Parallels.
